When health and safety incidents happen, you take the time to review and learn from them. You talk with workers and contractors, take notes, change processes, do whatever is best to learn, improve and reduce the chance of it happening again.
Now apply that to emergency management. Think about the last emergency situation and reflect on what could have been done better. Ask yourself and your team:
Evacuation – when did we last evacuate?
Weather incident – when did the weather last impact our business?
Natural disaster – earthquake, tsunami, tornado? If you haven’t had the real thing happen, how was the last simulation?
For each of the above ask –
What went well?
What could we improve?
How well did we communicate?
Would group texting have helped?
